Marysia and I went to see Birds of Prey in the cinema and before we went I had seen mixed reviews for it. I am not the biggest fan of superhero type films however they are growing on me.
After watching Suicide Squad I was really hoping there would be another instalment which followed the character of Harley Quinn as I really enjoyed Margot Robbie’s portrayal of the character.
The story is narrated by Harley Quinn and whilst the timeline of the story bounces backwards and forwards it still makes sense. The whole film takes you on a roller-coaster of a journey. But I really enjoyed the balance between the humour and the action as this kept the film exciting and the story fresh. I definitely think that director Cathy Yan got this right.
Whilst I did enjoy the action in the film I did find that there was an excessive use of slow motion which at times felt like it took the pace out of the action sequence. Although I did really enjoy the final chase sequence!
I would have quite liked to have seen the group get together earlier in the film as this would have allowed the audience a chance to see their character’s to develop a bit more.
I have seen a debate online where the Joker should have made an appearance in the film. Personally I feel he wouldn’t add anything to the film although I can understand why people would have thought the Joker’s character would appear at some point. If anything, I think having such a large character in a film like this would detract from the message that this film is trying to make.
Overall, I really enjoyed the film and I would definitely watch it again. It was funny, had the right amount of action to keep you interested engaged for the duration of the film.
I would like to see another film featuring Harley Quinn as I think she is such a great character and Margot Robbie really does a great job of bringing her personality to life.
